Last summer, the only sandal to be seen wearing was a thong-style with a thin strip of leather neatly wedged between the big toe and its nearest neighbour. Wedges are still very much around this year but they're now on the sole of the shoe, giving a stacked appearance to your feet. Provided you don't try to emulate the Spice Girls and add an extra six inches to your height, this can actually be a very comfortable wear. Traditionally, sandals had thin soles which made them tough to take after half an hour or so. The wedge provides additional cushioned support and a broad band across the instep allows the foot plenty of freedom and comfort. The present bout of humid weather makes such ease of movement particularly welcome.
