MUSIC
Elvis Costello
Bord Gáis Energy Theatre Dublin 8pm bordgaisenergytheatre.ie
Musical polyglot, discarder of comfort zones, occasional superb songwriter – the man is all of these and more. Tonight's gig is Costello solo, so it's just him, a few acoustic guitars, a flick through his estimable back catalogue and – judging by every other gig we've seen over the decades – a masterclass in how to be funny between songs.
ART
The art of finding a remote place
Thomas Brezing. Molesworth Gallery, 16 Molesworth St Oct 16-Nov 7 molesworthgallery.com
There's a generosity of vision to Thomas Brezing's work. He makes busy, layered, spacious paintings that are energetically, chattily, compulsively engaged with the world around him. Born in Germany and long resident in Ireland, he says his work is underpinned by "a certain homelessness", a sense of not belonging combined with a perpetual search for identity.
CLUB
Oneman
Twisted Pepper Dublin 10.30pm djoneman.net
The first club night on this edition of the city-wide Beatyard festival sees Rinse FM DJ Oneman hit the decks with support from the Welcome crew. Aside from his tenure on that much admired south London station, Oneman (or Steve Bishop) has also reached audiences via a barrage of mix-albums. The latest is Solitaire Vol 3, a cracking set-to with the selector concentrating on various strands of US and UK underground club sounds.
JAZZ
Tommy Halferty Trio
JJ Smyths, Aungier Street, Dublin 8.30pm, jjsmyths.com
The Derry-born guitarist has been one of the most influential figures on the Dublin jazz scene since the 1980s, both as a performer and a teacher. He has a string of fine recordings to his name but live is the best way to experience his passionate playing. His current trio features bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady.
