Seoltaí Séidte Setting Sail Gael Linn
****
This timely collection is an archivist's dream and a trad fan's Christmasses all come together. Gathering together the first 20 78s released by Gael Linn from 1957-1961, with forensic sleeve notes from Nicolas Carolan, there's fodder for countless Ph.D. students and session players alike here. Stalwarts from Willie Clancy to Seosamh Ó hÉanaí, Denis Murphy and Joe Burke don't so much jostle for position amid the 43 tracks as cosy up alongside one another, like long-lost siblings reunited at last. From Seán 'ac Dhonncha's opener, Bean Pháidín (recently rejuvenated by Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola) to flute player and composer Vincent Broderick's sublime set of reels, Down The Broom, Seoltaí Séidte is a buoyant and spirited amble through the past. A divine intervention by Gael Linn.
