BEOGA
The Incident
Compass Records★★★

Self-proclaimed as "trad on anabolic steroids", Beoga's third collection kicks off ominously with a trio of original tunes that float free until they're returned to terra firma with the resounding thud of a meandering saxophone. Many of their tune sets have an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach, and at times the listener might crave just a hint of space between the notes, but Beoga's audacious inclusion of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's Strange Thingsyields fine dividends in the original-thinking stakes. Their treatment of The Bellevue Waltzis a taster of what subtlety they're capable of, too, although they eventually break out into overdrive just when you think they have tethered their blinding enthusiasm. Marquee music with occasional snug-room flourishes. www.compassrecords.com SIOBHÁN LONG
