The Wedding Singer (15)
In this amiable exercise in 1980s nostalgia, Adam Sandler plays a former rock band singer now reduced to performing at weddings - and reduced to tears when his own fiancee leaves him standing at the altar. Drew Barrymore co-stars as the waitress who befriends him in this slight, but sweet-natured romantic comedy made with a keen sense of the absurd and packed full of hit singles of the period.
The Apostle (12)
A labour of love for Robert Duvall, who wrote, produced, directed and financed it, and gives an astonishing performance in the central role of a Pentacostal preacher whose all-consuming zeal is undermined by an all-too-human frailty. This thoughtful and riveting drama on the themes of faith, re-invention and redemption also features Farrah Fawcett, Miranda Richardson and Billy Bob Thornton.
City Of Angels (12)
In this handsome but simplistic new age remake of the Wim Wenders film, Wings Of Desire, Nicolas Cage plays an angel on duty in Los Angeles, where he meets a heart surgeon (Meg Ryan) who's suffering from a crisis of confidence after losing a patient for no apparent reason. The director is Brad Silberling, who made Casper.
Kiss Or Kill (18)
Bill Bennett's handsome Australian road movie is an edgy and clever thriller featuring Matt Day and Frances O'Connor as a young couple on the run after one of their small-time scams goes fatally wrong. But the film's excessive use of jump-cuts ultimately proves merely irritating.
Mimic (18)
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro follows the intriguing Cronos with his American debut, a dull and ugly science-fiction horror movie featuring hideous giant cockroaches on the rampage in the catacombs of Manhattan. Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam and Josh Brolin play the principal humans on the case.
