Dark, beautiful Italian fable, with shades of Whistle Down the Wind and Spirit of the Beehive, telling the story of a young boy who, while playing in the baking wheat fields near his home, comes across a kidnapped youth in a hole. Some may find it a little too gorgeous for its own good, but even such begrudgers must admit that there are worse things to complain about. Donald Clarke

Director Morgan Spurlock lives exclusively on McDonalds fare for a month in his satirical documentary charting the consequences of this diet. Almodóvar astutely adopts classic 1940s film noir as the model for his enthralling and immensely stylish drama in which Bernal is outstanding as an enigmatic young man who brings a screenplay about clerical sex abuse to a gay director (Martinez) and as the transvestite of the film-within-the-film.
