VILLAINS OF CHOICE

Many Marvel fans were outraged when Dr Octopus did not appear in the first Spider-Man film. But most enthusiasts have welcomed Alfred Molina's agreeably restrained turn as the many-limbed nutcase in Spider-Man 2. So which of Spidey's villains should appear next and which actors would we like to see trading quips with Tobey Maguire?

THE VULTURE

Elderly baldie who managed to cause the webslinger many problems despite the fact that his only special talent was an ability to fly using a tatty pair of unconvincing wings. If Mr Burns from The Simpsons were a real person he would walk the audition. We may, however, have to make do with Bruce Dern. Ideal Slumming British Thespian: Patrick Stewart.

THE RHINO

A big man dressed like a rhino. He used to point his horn at Spidey and run very quickly. Hollywood would probably sign up The Rock, but that is only because most casting agents have yet to meet Brian Cowen. I.S.B.T: Brian Cox.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER

Fantastically rich aristocrat with a very gay moustache and a great big knife who hunted Spider-Man just for sport. I want to suggest Tom Selleck, but that's really just because of what usually sits between that actor's upper lip and his nose. Antonio Banderas makes more sense. I.S.B.T: Gary Oldman.

MYSTERIO

Green wizard with a fishbowl for a head who, it later transpired, was actually an illusion conjured up by former movie special effects technician Quentin Beck. As it is really all about the voice, this may still be a job for Dennis Hopper. I.S.B.T: Anthony Hopkins.

ELECTRO

Beneficiary of the type of industrial accident that happens frequently in Marvel comics, Maxwell Dillon gained the power to create electricity after being hit by lightning while doing something to a stack of power cables. Energetic enough to be played by Jim Carrey. Unfortunately. I.S.B.T.: Tim Roth.
