Within and Without Weird World****

Ernest Greene was one of those producers who enjoyed 15 seconds of fame when chillwave made dreamy soundscapes a while back. The scene left as quickly as it arrived, but Greene is still standing, and Within and Withoutsuggests the Georgia native may well enjoy a longer run than his peers. Much of this comes down to how he works his trademark gauzy effects and blissed-out tones into sturdier, tougher creations. Instead of just being the main attraction, these wafts of Balearic sonics, trip-hop nostalgia and dreamy coastal ebbs and flows now come attached to strong, fragrant tunes such as Eyes Be Closed, Beforeand the title track, which come with much reverb and shine. Producer Ben Allen warrants a mention (he did similar spadework for Animal Collective on Merriweather Post Pavilion) but the success of this is primarily down to Greene's new slant on what he does.
