It's been quite a few months for the Edinburgh act (above) thanks to the Mercury Music gong and cheque in October. The prize brought the band and their Dead album firmly into the limelight and increased the fanbase for their intriguing, infectious slew of hip-hop and pop-noir. No strangers to Irish audiences, Young Fathers play Belfast as part of the 10th Out to Lunch festival.

Audiences have always appreciated Carthy’s knack for playing the brightest, broadest selection of tunes on the block with disco, ska, hip-hop, reggae, house and assorted grooves in the mix. Expect many twists and turns in the course of his five-hour sets this weekend.

Yes, he may have a mass of dreadlocks that scare away children but when it comes to idiosyncratic, intelligent pop, there are few to beat Belfast’s Peter Wilson. These are the first dates of a nationwide tour, so be advised: Wilson will be in your area sometime soon.

JAZZ

Sugar Club, Leeson St, Dublin, 8.30pm, €10/€12.50,

Pick of the Week: Outside of the mainstream, this week offers a fine selection of more intriguing musical options. Chief among them is tonight at the Sugar Club, when Taylor McFerrin and Marcus Gilmore team up for Choice Cuts' Future Jazz Series. Yes, McFerrin is the
son of Bobby, but he has a heavyweight reputation of his own as a DJ, producer, keyboardist and beatboxer, with collaborations from the likes of Robert Glasper and Emily King already out in the world. This genre-bending duo come with some pretty heavyweight pedigree but the past doesn't weigh too heavily on these two explorers of the sonic universe.
