What’s On Friday: St Vincent, Valentia Isle Festival, Willie Clancy Summer School

ROCK
St Vincent
Iveagh Gardens, Dublin 6pm €36 ticketmaster.ie Also Tues, Galway

Quite likely the most inventive (if ever so slightly, delightfully askew) pop songwriter on the planet, Annie Clark's (above) angles on what she terms "vague neo-futurism" are presently hitting all the right marks. In other words, this will be a serious treat. Support in Dublin is Mew, and in Galway, Little Green Cars pave the way.

HOUSE
DJ Qu
Pacino's Dublin 11pm €14
subjectevents.com
New Jersey's DJ Qu come to town, which is good news for fans of deep, dark, tribal house. Over the past decade, the former house dancer's Strength Music label has been where he's honed mesmerising, sparse tracks like Repozitioned Soul and Secret Place. A big support bill tonight with Mode_1, Galactuc Beat Club, Vladimir Miler Jr., Do Funkk, Contour, Richard Felle and live sets from SDWTRX and String Theory Soundsystem.

ISLAND LIFE
Valentia Isle Festival
Valentia Island 3pm €169/€89/€69/€50

A three-day arts/music/ family-friendly event on a beautiful island off the southwest of Co Kerry? Sounds okay to us. Acts featured across the weekend include Norman Jay, Jerry Dammers, RSAG, Young Wonder, The Pale, Frank & Walters, Natty Wailer, John Blek, The Vincents, Elastic Sleep, Toy Soldier, and The Eskies.

This year marks the 43rd year of this landmark summer school, a must for any dyed in the wool fan of traditional music. Workshops, sessions and concerts abound, with the great and the good to be found in back-room bars, cosy corners and on stage in the community centre. Harmonica and concertina concerts feature tonight, with an affectionate tribute to the great Muiris Ó Rocháin, one of the founders of the summer school, tomorrow night.
