“Whatever happened to bacon and cabbage?” asks Eamon, a bachelor farmer recently discharged from hospital, who has met his neighbour by the side of the road. It’s one of a litany of losses in Malachy McKenna’s short elegiac play about the decline of rural Ireland, adapted from his award- winning radio play. With turf-bogs lying idle, sheep stocks sold off to neighbouring counties, and wind turbines edging into the countryside, Eamon and Nashee find themselves in an Ireland with little support or accommodation for them, and not much more than rueful humour to talk about it. As bandits conduct raids across these isolated farms, and old age eats away at their independence, at least they find solidarity in each other – don’t they?
