Love carries high stakes in Brian Friel’s regularly performed diptych.

The winners of the first play are a young couple preparing for their final school exams, but 1960s Ireland is considerably more testing. She is pregnant, society is unforgiving and the future – reported by a small chorus of elders – is short on promise. Losers, by comparison, finds happiness and heartbreak in less extreme circumstances. An older couple, badgered by busybodies, battle against suffocating odds, but might have been more careful what they wished for. The Everyman’s Julie Kelleher directs these hardy perennials, love stories eternally broken in two.
