What’s on Monday: The Sea, The Sea; Bob & Judy; and Harry Bradley

ART

The Sea, The Sea
Ruth E Lyons. Mermaid Arts Centre, Main St, Bray, Co Wicklow Until Sep 5 mermaidartscentre.ie

Ruth E Lyons links two startling natural phenomena linked by water in her new sculpture (right), film and photographic work. One is the salt of the landlocked Zechstein Sea, the other the bizarre discovery of a mass of water vapour in deep space, 100,000 times larger than the sun, around a quasar 30 billion trillion miles away from us.

Bob & Judy
Theatre Upstairs, Dublin. Ends Aug 8 Tues-Sat 7pm (Wed & Sat mat 1pm) theatreupstairs.ie

One of the most far-sighted ideas of TheatreUpstairs, now three years in operation on the banks of the Liffey, has been to appoint a company in residence for the year. Not only has the venue committed itself to new writing, it has also placed faith in companies to develop their skill by giving them the consistent exposure to audiences. It's the only way that new writing can grow. Fast Intent, which last appeared with The Man in Two Pieces, now return with Gerald Adlum's new play, a love story between two misfits (Adlum and Nessa Matthews, above) in a world on the brink of chaos, who meet on the night of a once-in-a- millennium event in space, tearing across the sky. That may sound like it's over in a flash, but Fast Intent give every sign of being in it for the long haul.

Harry Bradley
St. Nicholas' Collegiate Church 8pm €15 tunesinthechurch.com

Visitors to Galway are lucky to have so much live music to choose from throughout the year, but the summer is special, and this year’s Tunes In The Church concert series is a real treat. Tonight, Belfast flute player Harry Bradley plays a solo concert where his effervescent style can be given free rein in an exceptionally warm setting. Even for those unconvinced of the merits of church venues (present hack included), St Nicholas’ Church offers a vibe that overrides its potentially stifling eccliastical origins.
