Over recent years, the Seán Ó Riada competition has been a lure for musicians from home and away. This year, 15 fiddlers compete for the Bonn Óir award. Tonight’s show features a host of past winners including Aoife Ní Bhriain, Tim McHugh, Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn, Oisín Morrison and Cormac Begley on fiddle, flute, pipes, harp and concertina, respectively. A distillation of the best emerging musicians in full flight.

Supernumerary – Ronnie Hughes
Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast Until Mar 6

Ronnie Hughes’s paintings seem to spring from a fascination with systems, structures and grand theories, be they language, maths or theoretical physics. But they also arise from a conviction that no system is quite up to the unruly nature of the world, or the human mind; that there is always something incalculable, something outside the rules. His paintings are visually engrossing and perfectly pitched, and they keep us guessing.
