What’s on Saturday: Pride, Manu Chao, Phuture and DJ Sotofett

Pick of the Week: Pride

Pride events finish up this weekend with a glittery bang in most parts of Ireland. There are smaller events around the country, but Dublin Pride seems to be the most active.

The Pride village opens in Merrion Square on Saturday at noon, with entertainment from Hunt and Gather, a community zone, family area and costumes stand, with Le Galaxie, Jerry Fish, Elm, and three big screens so you can keep on eye on the Pride parade.

The parade itself will assemble at noon and begin moving through Dublin at 1:30pm, starting at the Garden of Remembrance, moving down through O’Connell Street and then taking a left on the quays. A map is at dublinpride.ie/the-parade.

If you want to get the ball rolling before that, there are several breakfast options. Boteco Brazil on Ormond Quay are having a pink champagne breakfast, Outhouse are having a non-alcoholic breakfast, and Whitefriar Grill are having a pride brunch (much more civilised). Later on, the usual venues will be up and running, with a street party at Pantibar, an all-day celebration in the George, a Gold alcohol-free party in Outhouse and plenty of options elsewhere.

Pick of the bunch might just be Mother’s block party at the Tivoli. The last iteration on the night of the Marriage Equality referendum was the best party in town, and their stage at Body and Soul was no slouch. It’s an early one, 5pm to midnight, with Crazy P Soundsystem, Kormac’s Big Band, Le Galaxie DJs, Billy Scurry, Faune and Mother DJs, followed by an afterparty at District 8 from midnight to 3am.

PUNK POLITICS

Manu Chao
Royal Hospital, Dublin 6.30pm €27.90 ticketmaster.ie

Polyglot, political and social activist, influenced as much by punk and rock as by reggae, ska, Ibero-American salsa and Algerian rai, Franco-Spanish musician/songwriter Manu Chao makes a rare appearance in Ireland.

ACID

Phuture
Twisted Pepper, Dublin 11pm €15/€13 facebook/com/wearephuture

Phuture are one of those acts who can quite categorically say that they changed the game. Back in 1987, Chicago's DJ Pierre, Spanky and Herb B released Acid Tracks and the energetic, unmistakeable squelch of that Roland TB-303 put acid house in motion.

Three decades on, Pierre and Spanky are heading to Dublin with newcomer Lothario Lee for a live set with a DJ set from Pierre, while the Fatty Fatty team are in the other room.

CLUB

DJ Sotofett
Bar Tengu, Dublin €12/€9/€5

DJ Sotofett is the Norwegian dude at the helm of Sex Tags Mania, the go-to label for out- there dance cuts, which has shipped dozens of killer 12-inches releases since 2004. When he's not running things over there, Sotofett's own releases, such as the recent excellent, expansive Drippin' for a Tripp EP for Honest Jons, come highly recommended, especially in terms of the collaborators he manages to bring into the picture. Sotofett is flying solo at Out to Lunch.
