What’s on Thursday: DIT Jazz Masters Octet and This Lasted Until Dawn

ART

This lasted until dawn...
County Hall, Wexford County Council, Wexford Until July 31

Wexford County Council, with the Wexford Arts Centre, has put together a fairly terrific show of paintings from IMMA’s collection. The title is from an Icelandic account of the Battle of Clontarf, and myth, history, perception and memory, the material and the immaterial worlds emerge as themes in powerful works by Basil Blackshaw, Oliver Comerford, Barrie Cooke, Diana Copperwhite, William Crozier, Elizabeth Magill, Michael Mulcahy and Hughie O’Donoghue.

There are student concerts and then there are student concerts. The current Masters in Jazz Performance programme at DIT, directed by guitarist Mike Nielsen, includes some of the country’s finest musicians, such as saxophonists Michael Buckley and Ciaran Wilde, keyboardist Scott Flanagan and drummer James Mackin. Here’s a chance to hear them eat up some classic hard-bop charts from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.
