Finlay Mackintosh. Site, Sounds & Syllables: Recent performances by James King
The Dock, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim Until Jun 6
Finlay Mackintosh never leaves home without a camera – not the mobile phone variety – and he constantly photographs his native Glasgow, and wherever else he visits. He concentrates on the everyday, the ordinary. His vast library of photographs is the source for his paintings, informal studies of the urban fabric. At The Dock he’s paired with a performance show, documenting recent works by veteran performer James King, who will be resident artist in the gallery from April 24-26.

Across four albums (her latest is last year’s Are We There), Brooklyn singer and songwriter Sharon Van Etten has showcased singular skills with confessional and intimate (some would say raw) songwriting. Such is her growing appeal that this gig has been upgraded to a larger venue. Special guest is Sam Amidon.
OPERA
Madama Butterfly
Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. Apr 22-26 7.30pm €35-120

Nagasaki, 1904. Pinkerton, who is an officer and something short of a gentleman, marries a comely and besotted Japanese bride, Ciocio-san, or, to her pals, “Butterfly”. He stands to gain plenty, with minimal outlay, and she stands to lose everything that matters. It’s hard to think of a more familiar opera other than Carmen, which the Moscow State Opera performed during their last visit. Irish soloist Celine Byrne joins the cast, with Bolshoi star Anna Nechaeva as the heroine who undertakes a tragic metamorphosis.
