R&B RUMBLE

The Strypes

Academy Dublin 8pm €25 ticketmaster.ie Also Thurs, Dublin

ART

The View in Here

Jessica Dessner. CIT Wandesford Quay Gallery, Clarke’s Bridge, Cork Until Sep 26 soundsfromasafehrabour.com

Dessner features in the visual strand of Cork’s terrific Sounds from a Safe Harbour festival of music (mostly), art and conversation. Jessica Dessner (untitled, above right) makes her hyperrealist drawings – “accidental still lifes” from photographs taken with an Olympus analogue film camera. Ailbhe Ní Bhriain, Linda Buckley & Irene Buckley also show screen-based work. The National’s Bryce Dessner is the curator.

THEATRE

The Gallant John Joe

Town Hall, Clifden. Sep 23 7pm clifdenartsweek.ie

Fourteen years since it first appeared, Tom MacIntyre and Tom Hickey’s collaboration as writer and performer returns for a sporadic tour. A Cavan widower grappling with mental and physical infirmity stays on his feet by telling stories, featuring a gallery of comically distorted characters: Bossman, the Hitmatrist, the Chinee, John Joe O’Reilly and his teenage daughter.
