Inspired by her travels in Nepal and India, Aoife Desmond's mixed media paintings certainly convey something of the spiritual essence at the heart of these cultures. But the influence is neither notional nor overly referential, as Tibetan texts served to shape the initial format of the work, where the individual pages now displayed, were once part of a single volume.

The imagery scattered throughout this highly consistent and cohesive show is far from explicit, the artist developing an inventory of images which fade in and out of focus. These are predominately organic/figurative in nature, including crows, feathers, female form, vessel/container as well as textural materials such as leaves or dried flowers. The significance of these items may well have symbolic, perhaps even personal resonance, as there is a real sense that the artist is tapping into an intuitive creative impulse.

But if the meaning behind the work is not fully imparted, the physical process involved in the production is very real. In all, rich evocative surfaces are complemented by a strong sense of structural arrangement, both combining to lend an invitational air to the work. Within these there is much to admire; be it intense flashes of primary colours, mute atmospherics, the tactility of the mark making or layers of semitransparent pigment.

Originally Aoife was to have shared the exhibition with her parents, Maurice Desmond and Deirdre Meaney. Sadly, this was not to be, as Deirdre died suddenly this summer. And while the work was produced prior to her death, perhaps in some way the event is an appropriate way of marking her passing.
