This week's world music CDs reviewed
SOZNAK
Dear Dad Tango Demon/Harmonia Mundi****
A rich stream of current world music draws upon the influence of Europe's immigrant communities. Soznak, based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, include musicians from Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Iran, Iraq, Ireland and Spain. All these musical styles flow together nicely, lubricated with wit, charm and good humour. A sense of community is palpable, and Cooking in the Kitcheneven comes with recipes from various band members! The album kicks off in Congolese style with an easy rumba, then moves up a gear with the more soukous-paced Weekily. There follows a dance through flamenco, Angolan balladry, funky horn workouts and the Argentinian- flavoured title track, a tribute to the guitarist's late father. Very enjoyable. www.myspace.com/ soznak17
