John Wilson: Two Laurent Miquel bargains from Dunnes Stores

Wines for the Weekend: This Viognier and Faugères are both great value for money — the white exceptionally so

The French winemaker Laurent Miquel and his Irish wife, Neasa, dropped in to a recent Dunnes Stores tasting while enjoying a holiday in Ireland. You might be familiar with Miquel’s name, as his company also supplies O’Briens (and at one stage Tesco and Marks & Spencer too). He consistently produces a wide range of really well-made wines — white, rosé and red — that offer great value for money. Dunnes stocks both of today’s bottles.

Laurent Miquel Côte 128 Viognier 2021, €10.40

Nicely textured with apricot and peach fruits and a touch of toasted hazelnuts, all bound together by a crisp, refreshing acidity. Try it with chicken dishes or oriental prawn and crab recipes. Exceptional value for money.

Laurent Miquel Kinsale Faugères 2020, €10.40

Made from a blend of 80 per cent Syrah and 20 per cent Grenache, this is a delicious, aromatic, rounded wine with plenty of supple, ripe dark fruits. Perfect with roast red meats or substantial casseroles. Great value for money.
