Ireland is expected to experience its highest temperatures of the year so far this week, but according to Met Éireann the warm spell will be “short-lived”.
The national forecaster said temperatures could reach up to 26 degrees on Friday, as the country catches the tail-end of the heatwave Spain is currently experiencing.
Deirdre Lowe, a forecaster with Met Éireann, said there will be a mix of cloud and sunny spells over the next few days, before it gradually gets warmer.
“Wednesday and Thursday aren’t going to be bad days. It’s going to be a bit warmer than it is now, temperatures up in and around 21 and 22 degrees in parts of the south and east. But it will be a bit cloudier and cooler elsewhere,” she said.

“It will be dry in many areas, but you will get some occasional showers or showery rains at times in parts of the West and north, particularly near the coast.”
The best of the sunny spells will be in the east and south of the country on Friday, according to the forecaster.
“We’re going to get really warm temperatures as the week goes on. Humid air moves up from Spain on Thursday night into Friday. It’s still going to be cloudier in the north and northwest with occasional showers,” Ms Lowe said.
“The really good temperatures are going to be short-lived but it will be the warmest temperatures so far this year. It will get up to possibly 26 degrees in parts of Leinster and east Munster on Friday. It will be in the mid to high teens in the north, to northwest.”
The warmer weather is a result of a heatwave in Spain, with a “Spanish plume of warm air” rising northwards later in the week.
Cloud and isolated light rain will move south-eastwards across the country on Friday night, with lowest temperatures of between nine to13 degrees.
Then by Saturday, temperatures will be back down to around the mid-teens in the rest of the country. The cloud and patchy light rain will clear from the south and southeast on Saturday morning.
For the rest of the day there will be sunny spells and just a few showers in the west and northwest.
Temperatures will warm again slightly on Sunday and in the early days of next week. While there will be a lot of dry weather, there will also be some showers in some areas of the country too.
The best of the sunshine will be in the southeast, where temperatures will reach the low twenties. It will be cooler and cloudier elsewhere.
