Four people die on Irish roads in 24-hour period, including two men in Armagh crash

Four others, including a baby, taken to hospital for medical treatment, with one woman in a critical condition

Two people were killed in a road traffic crash in Co Armagh on Friday, bringing the total number of people killed on Irish roads to four over a 24 hour period.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) received a report shortly before 12.45pm on Friday of a collision involving a dark grey Audi and a black Mercedes on the Killylea Road outside Killylea, Co Armagh.

“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from partner emergency services,” said PSNI Inspector Cherith Adair from the force’s collision investigation unit. “Both men died at the scene.”

Four others, including a baby, were taken to hospital for medical treatment. One of the women sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition.

The Killylea Road, which was closed for a period of time, has now fully reopened.

Detectives from the PSNI’s collision investigation unit are investigating the circumstances of the collision, and have urged witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage that could assist with enquiries to come forward.

Separately, a man in his 60s, a pedestrian, died after being hit by a car in the Flowerhill area of Navan, Co Meath at about 10.40pm on Friday night.

His body was taken to Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, where a postmortem is due to take place.

A second man in his 60s, the driver of the vehicle, was uninjured.

The road at Flowerhill remains closed with local diversions in place while a Garda technical examination of the scene was due to take place on Saturday morning.

Gardaí have urged any road users who may have camera footage, including dashcam, who were travelling in the area at the time of the incident to make this footage available to gardaí.

Earlier on Friday, a woman in her 70s, also a pedestrian, was killed in Co Carlow after she was struck by a car on the N80 at about 6.30pm on Friday in the townland of Rathcrogue.

Her body was removed from the scene and taken to the mortuary in Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem will take place in due course.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was uninjured.
