Daniel McLaughlin has been appointed Eastern Europe Correspondent.
Daniel graduated in Slavonic and East European Studies from the University of Glasgow and then joined the Reuters graduate trainee programme, which took him to London and Moscow. After going freelance, he started contributing to The Irish Times from Moscow in 2003 and continued after moving to Budapest and then Kyiv. His articles on central and eastern Europe have also appeared in the Guardian, the Observer, the Independent and the Daily Telegraph.
He covered the 2013-14 Maidan revolution in Ukraine and was in the east of country on assignment for The Irish Times when Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. He won the award for best foreign coverage at the Irish Journalism Awards in the same year.
