Japanese pregnancy causes stir

Tokyo - Japanese media yesterday reacted with jubilation to Princess Masako's possible pregnancy as television cameras chased anyone connected with her, including her Yorkshire terrier.

"We sincerely congratulate you," the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, the country's largest circulation daily, said in its editorial. "Please take good care of yourself and relax your body and soul."

The Imperial Household Agency stunned Japan on Monday with the announcement that the 37-year-old princess, wife of heir to the throne Crown Prince Naruhito (41), might be pregnant. The princess had a miscarriage and underwent an operation in 1999.
