Quara Cafayate Malbec, Mendoza; Domaine de Pellehaut Côtes de Gascogne Blanc; Chateau Dereszla Late Harvest Furmint Tokaji 2000.
Quara Cafayate Malbec, Mendoza, €7.99 This Argentine bottle is Martin Moran's red wine of the year. "Lashings of fruit and seductive chocolate and liquorice notes too," he writes. "It just begs for a big barbecued steak. An amazingly low price for this much wine, and the bottle weighs a ton, too, so it feels expensive." Molloy's Liquor Stores.
Domaine de Pellehaut Côtes de Gascogne Blanc, €6.69 Again with value in mind, Moran names this his white wine of the year. "I've tried several vintages of this little cracker, and it always delivers highly drinkable crisp fruit that appears dominated by Sauvignon Blanc with tangy gooseberry notes, although it's actually a blend of Chardonnay, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc and Ugni Blanc. From Superquinn.
Chateau Dereszla Late Harvest Furmint Tokaji 2000, €15.99 A relative bargain for Moran's dessert or fortified wine of the year. "One of the few successes of the post-communist wine world in the former Iron Curtain countries has been the classic sweet-wine region of Tokaji. Flavours are intense, with a fascinating mixture of tea, honey, apricot and marmalade allied to a wonderful luscious quality, yet retaining enough acidity to avoid becoming cloying.." From Mitchell & Son, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, and Glasthule, Co Dublin.
