Pernand-Vergelesses 2000, Les Vergelesses 1er Cru, Chanson, 13% abv, €22 This area in the north of the Côte de Beaune is known for good-value red Burgundy. This seductive offering, full of summer fruit aromas, has a light and elegant texture, and a smooth finish. O'Brien's.

Saint-Aubin 2004, Les Pitengerets 1er Cru, Chanson, 13.5% abv, €22 (reduced from €27) The other end of the Côte de Beaune and another area better known for value than for quality. However, this is a cracker, especially at this price. It is lightly oaked and packed with fruit. O'Brien's.

Mâcon-Igé 2004, Château London, Domaine des Roches, (6 for €72) One of the lesser known villages of the Mâcon, Igé offers good value in Chardonnay. Most Igé wines are vinified in stainless steel and, like this fresh, citrus-driven wine, are made to be drunk young. www.monalisawines.net.

Claude Boisset, Bourgogne 2004, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, 13% abv, €19.95 Winemaker Grégory Patriat is only getting into his stride, but wines such as this are markers that commitment to quality at all levels will produce. This rich, well-balanced Chardonnay is the entry level white; others would be happy to call it their best. From: The Bottleshop, Kilmacud, Dublin 14.
