Mary Dowey profiles a Spanish and a South Australian red...
Agramont Tempranillo, Navarra, Bodegas Principe de Viana 2001.
I've kept an eye on this appetising Spanish red for a long time. It's still amazingly affordable, with round, blackberryish flavours, lively acidity and gentle spice. Still one of the best-value buys on the Irish market - especially while on special offer. (This Tempranillo and the Crianza seem to me much more attractive than the Vuira-Chardonnay or Garnacha.) From Dunnes Stores, usually €7.69; on offer until May 9th at two for €12.99.
D'Arenberg The Stump Jump Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre, McLaren Vale 2001.
South Australian producer D'Arenberg is well known for making interesting wines with catchy names. (The "stump jump" is a type of plough, capable of hopping over eucalyptus roots - now you know.) This is a nice, juicy, easygoing red with hints of mint and liquorice. On special offer in NOffLA off-licences including Carvills, Camden St; Vintry, Rathgar; McHughs, Kilbarrack & Artane; Red Island, Skerries; McEntees, Kells; Blessings, Cavan; Macs, Limerick; Wicklow Wine Co; World Wide Wine, Waterford; Wine Centre, Kilkenny; O'Donovans, Cork and others, €9.99.
