Mas Carlot, Cuvée Tradition, Costières de Nîmes 2007, 13.5%, €8.75.Made from a classic blend of Syrah and Grenache, this really is great value; very moreish soft easy ripe dark fruits, supple but concentrated with a lovely herbal note. Stockist:From Vineyards Direct

Sancerre Domaine Fleuriet & Fils 2007, 12.5%, €12.95A very attractive Sancerre, at a very competitive price, with zesty lean green fruits and a mouth-watering citrus bite. Probably better with food; seafood or lighter salads would be perfect. Stockist: From Vineyards Direct

Madiran, Domaine du Moulié 2003, 12.5%, €10.75.Tucked away in the south-west of France, Madiran is one of the great unknown wine regions. The Tannat grape makes firm unyielding wines that usually require a few years' bottle-age. This example is now nicely mature, with rounded cool plum fruits and a good dry finish. Perfect with goose or a belly of pork. Stockists: WineOnLine
