ADDRESSING FASHION A fascinating seminar took place in Collins Barracks, Dublin recently at which a number of artists and designers spoke about the links between fashion and art. It was organised by Helen Beaumont from the museum, and speakers included Nigel Cheney, head of fashion in NCAD; Helen McAllister, a research student with an MA in embroidered textiles (and a fascination for Venetian footwear); Angela O Kelly, artist and curator; Donna Loveday of the Design Museum in London, and artist Alice Maher. Maher's brilliant address and essential grasp of the transformative power of clothes held the audience spellbound, particularly when she discussed her own work, such as the jacket made of nettles, or a necklace of lamb's hearts, thought-provoking items that attract or repulse.
