Fighting Words, the creative writing centre for young people in Dublin, which opened its doors earlier this year, is keeping up its mission to get youngsters writing by offering a unique range of summer camps. The four-day courses include: graphic novel/comic book writing for 14-17-year-olds; photography with narrative writing for 9-11-year-olds and playwriting/performance art, for 7-10-year-olds. Tech-savvy teens (and show me one that isn’t) will jump at the chance to get on the film script writing/mobile phone filming course where they write a short script and then film it on their phones.

It’s a volunteer-based organisation – established by Roddy Doyle – and the people giving the classes tend to be professional writers, illustrators or creative writing enthusiasts giving their time to help children make the most of their creative energies. Astonishingly, in this age of eye-wateringly expensive summer camps, these at Fighting Words are free. Booking is first come, first served at bookings@fightingwords.ie, and see www.fightingwords.ie for more information.
