Roll up for a roast

A few Sundays ago my extended family and I spent the weekend in Dublin and wanted to share a traditional Sunday dinner. Given that none of us are carvery fans, we opted to try out a new approach at the Exchequer gastropub in the city centre.

The idea is that for €39.95, four people can order a roast rib of beef, rack of pork, or full roast chicken, and the meat arrives at your table for you to carve yourself. Judging by the diners in attendance when we visited, many of the male customers relished sharpening their knives and dishing out the portions.

The offer includes vegetables, mash, roast potatoes and gravy, as well as a complimentary bottle of house wine. All meals have to be pre-booked by Friday evening, as the food is cooked to order. The meat is Irish, sourced by chef Lee Doyle, mostly from O’Mahony meats in Coolock. And, of course, the best part about enjoying a Sunday roast away from home is that no one ends up arguing over the washing-up.

The Exchequer is located on Exchequer Street in Dublin 2. To book, telephone: 01-6706787 or see theexchequer.ie.
