Jackson Homes, led by developer Bryan Cullen, has got permission from Dublin City Council for a residential scheme on the former Enable Ireland lands in Sandymount, Dublin 4. Permission was sought for a 44-unit scheme, but the council ruled that four townhouses be omitted and the land used as open space. There will also be 44 underground car-parking spaces. The development will be spread out over two blocks rising to four storeys.
Last year, Cullen paid around €11 million for the 0.9-acre site which has 44 metres of frontage to Sandymount Avenue, and is 300 metres from the Dart. It remains to be seen whether the scheme will be appealed to An Bord Pleanála by locals. Last year, locals opposed a proposal for 46 residential units on the site saying that the overbearing nature of the four-storey apartment blocks would change the character of Sandymount Avenue and tower over nearby buildings.
Cullen is a prolific builder in the Dublin 4 area. Last year he bought another site at nearby Gilford Road for €16 million - the 1.26-acre site was owned by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa. In 2003, he acquired a 3.3-acre site behind Sachs hotel off Morehampton Road in Donnybrook for €20 million from the Carmelite Fathers. This site now accommodates the Bloomfield Park residential development.
