Like the look of this week's houses? Alanna Gallagher shows how it's done.
The interior of Kilmurry Housein Thomastown has many clever period ideas to steal. In the property's ballroom flock wallpaper is a retro find that looks swell when used below the dado rail only.
The flock was a find the owners came across at Power & Co in Clonmel (052 22367). At present Power's has a limited range of flocks in browns, creams and greens. Prices are between €10 and €20 per roll.
In the hall a beautiful, cabriolet-legged, round table of burl walnut was sourced from Flanagan's of Mount Merrion (01 288 0218). The reproduction piece was chosen because of its likeness to a table pictured in a 1950s edition of Country Life in which the property featured. Flanagan's currently has a similar style of table, also in burl walnut.
It is reduced in their current sale to €3,495.
The glass hall lantern was bought at Mealy's in Castlecomer (056 444 1229). For something similar try their next auction, which is being held on Tuesday, September 25th at 11am. Lot previews are on Sunday 23rd and Monday 24th.
In the garden room the spectacular 14ft Wyatt-style windows open upwards, sliding into the wall space above, and offer direct access to the gardens. It's an alternative idea to French doors. Try Dunlavin-based Marvin Architectural (045 401000) who recently also opened a showroom at 71/72 Grove Rd in Rathmines (01 406 6440). Windows of similar proportions will cost in the region of €15,000 each.
