THE ADJOINING reception rooms of 27 Castle Avenue in Clontarf are an exercise in understated neutrality and include matching fireplaces with insets of herringbone brickwork.

This pair of Cambridge limestone fireplaces came from Belle Cheminée in Capel Street (01-872 4122) and cost €4,500 each. The herringbone brickwork panels cost an additional €475 per fireplace. Add duck's nest fire baskets, €1,000 per basket, to complete this very simple and elegant style statement. These brick panels are delicate and will darken if you light real fires.

The hand-cut, varying width, engineered oiled oak floor, is by carpenter Paul Somers (086 105 2241). Expect to pay about €60 a metre for something similar.

The reproduction mirrors are from Renaissance on Capel Street (01-887 3809).

Elsewhere, the main bathroom features Villeroy Boch sanitaryware which came from Fieaga Bath and Tile (041 987 8111) in Drogheda. The oval Portobello inset bath with tap ledge costs €860. A half shuttered window allows for privacy while a wall of tall units by Kelco Designs (01-296 5500) offers oodles of storage.
