Radiators are rarely a thing of beauty and while vast improvements have been made in wall-hung designs that look more like art installations than functional room warmers, radiator design has lacked a certain sense of flair in its evolution.
Not any more.
Studio DaG is a Dutch atelier comprising an illustrator called Denise van der Sar and a craftsman called Guus van Leewen.
They’ve designed a highly unusual collection of powder-coated steel frame radiators, in the shape of an animal trio comprising a deer, a ram and an arctic fox.
Each one is a three-dimensional, talking point creation that comes with a genuine fur coat of its real life counterpart. Users can sit on the ram, lie down by the fox and the deer stands in the hallway as a hanger to dry coats.
The removable furs are stuffed with wheat to retain the heat from the oil-filled radiators. They are designed to allow users wrap the warm skin about them as they move around the house.
The idea is inspired by the traditional Nordic way of life, when people lived above their animals to benefit from their rising body heat, van der Sar explains.
With the deer costing €8,800, the ram, €5,700 and the fox, €5,700, house training the live versions could well prove a far more economical – and equally warming – option.
