Co Galway: €4.95mHistoric past, beautiful interior and a good parcel of land, a Co Galway castle new to the market has all the qualifications for a fine country residence.

Cregg Castle, nine miles north of Galway City near Corrandulla, is expected to fetch €4.95 million by private treaty sale through Clonbur auctioneer Helen Cassidy.

Standing on 120 acres of woodland and pasture, the 12-bedroom castle includes a separate apartment with recording studio, a private chapel, three-bedroom gate-lodge, music room and numerous period features.

Cregg Castle was originally built in 1648 by Clement Kirwan on the site of an 11th century castle and remains of the slit windows and stone stairwells exist to this day. More recent residents have carried out extensive renovations, including the current owners, who operated a thriving guesthouse in the castle. Guests loved the cattle, chickens, turkeys, geese and sheep which roamed freely in the fields down by the River Cregg, which flows through the land.
