Organic paints

People often think that organic paints will cost a lot more but I've found that they dilute extremely well and still give a good quality finish. The main problem with regular paint is the anti-fungal chemicals in them which are implicated in a condition called Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, in which some people have allergic reactions to substances such as petrol, paints, air fresheners and so on. Air fresheners, for instance, stimulate the same sensory nerve that flowers do and for a moment it thinks it is smelling a flower - the aroma goes to the upper part of the nasal cavity and dries it out, this can lead to a headache which may last for hours or days. Instead of air fresheners use an oil burner in which you put a few drops of essential oil into water. When the flame beneath makes the water evaporate it carries the perfume into the air. Catch flies sweetly

Some insect killers that you hang up are impregnated with chemicals that began life as a military nerve gas so will not do your health any good. I wouldn't even buy food in a shop that had one hanging up. Instead you can hang up deterrents such as sweetpea or spearmint which houseflies don't like.

No to plastic

Replace as many plastic objects in your home as possible and replace them with items made from stainless steel, enamel, coir, wicker and clay. Instead of using chemicals to control wood worm, treat it with borax. This substance is a natural chemical from deposits in Italian lakes. It is relatively cheap and very effective.

Buy dear - live longer

MDF (medium density fibreboard), chipboard and blockboard all contain formaldehyde which they release into the atmosphere. Use solid timber instead. It does cost more but if you buy an expensive product you expect it to last longer than a cheaper one - it's the same with food and the items in your house - by investing more in what you eat and live with you will help your body last longer.

Wool is best

All-wool carpets with a cotton underlay don't create static so they last longer and stay cleaner. Static caused by man-made fibres in carpets, bedding and curtain attracts dust.
