THE COLOUR palette of the Norman suite at Doonbeg draws inspiration from the sea, rough coastline, clouds, wild flowers, and grasses of the west coast of Ireland. The result is a cosy, unpretentious country room.

Colortrend's Natural Echo provides a fresh backdrop to the room and the woodwork gives a slight contrast in Farrow Ball Bone.

The sofa and chairs help give the room a country house feel and are from London company Beaumont Fletcher (beaumontandfletcher.com). They were handmade using methods employed by Victorian upholsterers. For a similar look try the Sofa Factory (01-4546877) which has an Ennis sofa with a kiln-dried beech frame, that costs around €1,892 if it's covered in one of the company's mid-price fabrics and Scotchguarded. Its Ballsbridge armchair cost around €1,418. The wicker baskets and Orkney chair introduce a rustic element. As iconic chairs go, the Orkney chair, designed in 1876 by David Munro Kirkness, can take its place with the best. Orkney company Scapa Crafts (scapacrafts.co.uk) makes the chairs in driftwood, oak and walnut. They cost from around £850 (€1,095).
