When designing their kitchen/diningroom, the owners of 32 Rathmines Park decided to steer clear of high-gloss units, which they felt would date quickly.

Instead, they went for a timeless light maple kitchen with a pale worktop in composite granite. The kitchen is from the Alno range at McNally and has a Natural Royal Maple Finish. It costs around €35,000, excluding appliances. The worktop has some in-built sparkle that reacts to the light.

Design features include a large central island with wine storage racks and bookshelves. They avoided too much stainless steel or dark granite worktops, which they feel are difficult to keep clean.

A 9ft French oak table takes centre stage in the dining area. Custom-made by Hugh Drennan Sons (028 9182 0892) it cost €2,500, including the bench.

The owner found some Laura Ashley oak chairs that matched perfectly and cost around €70 each. The tiles are Coem Travertine, purchased at Lomac tiles (01-405 3560), which costs around €70 per sq m. The ceiling lights came from UK company the Light Corporation (lightcorporation.com) and cost €50-€60 each.

The artworks on the walls are reproduction pieces from the Metropolitan Museum in New York which the owners felt would help break up the white expanse of the room.

Made from a sandstone and resin mix, they match the pale look of everything in the room.
