Shoparound: It doesn't get much brighter and bolder than the exuberant fabrics of Finnish design house Marimekko and fans of its screamingly loud patterns will be delighted to hear that they now can get their hands on a new Marimekko couch to go with their Marimekko curtains, bedspreads and mugs.
The bold fabrics of Marimekko - many designed as curtain material in the 1950s - have been making a big comeback in the last few years with cult designs, such as the oversized poppy pattern fabric becoming a must-have for kitchens and bedrooms of colour-loving homeowners.
Now the livingroom is getting a chance to get Marimekko-ed with a new range of couches and sofas at Inreda in Dublin's Camden Street.
Finnish company Adea has teamed up with Marimekko to produce super smart low-rise sofas and modular couches in Marimekko upholstery.
Curvy black and white stripes and pink and red paisleys are just a taste of the wild options available.
The beauty of the range is that the colours are "totally way off", according to Frank Goodwin from Inreda. They are a far cry from the 1960s flower patterns or the tweeds and wools in which couches are currently on offer, he says. "They offer something that little bit special."
The fabric is upholstery strength cotton, which can be taken off and dry-cleaned, he adds. The sofas come in either a regular-sized couch, which is priced from €2,395, or a modular sofa system which offers the option of having different sections in different seat depths (either 95cm or 120cm), which is priced at around €3,995. Such modular systems prove very popular with owners of spacious apartments who want the "big couch" look but often have difficulty getting the big couch into the apartment, according to Frank.
Matching ottomans are priced from €866 (95cm by 60cm) and go up to €1,075 (120cm by 120cm). Cushions cost between €65 and €85.
Also new to Inreda is a great range of storage systems from Finnish company Asplund. Called Rand, the system is available in white, anthracite, nougat, dark olive, light khaki and coral - all in a matt finish.
Cleverly designed, the system is available in lots of different heights, catering for all sorts of needs and spaces. Prices start at €515 for a bedside table.
