FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has donated cufflinks; former Miss World, Rosanna Davison a necklace and earrings set; and Ronan Keating a “silver dragon bracelet” – but further donations of jewellery, fine art and antiques are being sought for a charity auction by a new charity devoted to cancer research.
Jewels for Cures was established by former cancer patient Alison McCormick to raise funds for Professor John Crown’s Cancer Clinical Research Trust at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
The group, which is holding a fund-raising auction on Wednesday December 8th at 8pm in The Westbury Hotel, Dublin 2, is appealing particularly for “donations of gold, precious jewellery, fine art, gold or quality designer watches, gemstones, antique or vintage costume jewellery, designer jewellery, vintage designer handbags in good condition and silver artefacts”.
The charity pointed out that there are many valuable items lying unworn in jewellery boxes and unwanted in attics and said the proceeds of the sale would be used to help “scientists and doctors to continue to investigate promising new strategies for cancer treatment”.
Donations of “high-quality broken gold jewellery such as single earrings, single cufflinks, broken chains or other 9ct or 18ct jewellery which will then be smelted and sold” are also sought.
