A MAJOR haul of Irish silver goes under the hammer next Tuesday afternoon at the Temple Bar saleroom of Dublin auctioneer, John Weldon, following instructions from executors to sell their late father’s collection. He describes the collection as “incredible and wonderful”.

Highlights include 32 examples of Irish silver dish rings; rare pieces of Cork and Limerick silver; and 42 pieces of 1966 Irish silverware bearing the special hallmark known as An Claidheamh Solais (The Sword of Light), struck by the Irish Assay Office to commemorate the golden jubilee of the 1916 Rising.– MP
