AN IMPORTANT auction in Cork tomorrow features the contents of Bracken Lodge, Carrigrohane – the home of the late Alan Haughton. The former tennis champion, who played three times at Wimbledon and represented Ireland in the Davis Cup, died aged 93, in January.
Mr Haughton was a member of a well-known Quaker family prominent for generations in Cork business, sporting and social life.
Auctioneer Morgan O’Driscoll said the sale includes “a beautiful collection of silver, fine art, ceramics, rugs, jewellery, clocks and antique furniture”. Among the highlights are a “very rare” Queen Anne punch bowl, by Thomas Bolton, Dublin c.1700 with an estimate of €15,000-€25,000; and an Irish Regency parquetry bookcase, €2,000-€3,000.
An allegedly original 16th century Spanish Armada chest (€1,200-€1,800) was, presumably, washed up after the infamous fleet was scuppered by storms off the Irish coast. Paintings include The Regatta by Cork artist William Harrington (€3,000-€4,000) and Portrait of Mother and Child by Sarah Purser (€3,000-€5,000).
Viewing begins at noon today in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Little Island, Cork City where the auction takes place tomorrow, Sunday, April 17th at 4pm. –MP
