Friday (April 15th), Sotheby's, New York. An 18 in silver trophy in the shape of a shell (below), 141oz, presented to the winner of a yacht race held in 1853 at the Royal St George Yacht Club's regatta in Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire), sold for $40,000 (approximately €35,000) – well in excess of the estimate ($20,000-$30,000).

Tuesday (April 19th),Adam's, 26 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2. The history sale, 70 per cent of lots sold. Lot 40: a presentation sabre awarded to Col Charles Verker, the "hero of Collooney", for his defeat of French troops under the command of Gen Humbert at the Battle of Collooney on September 5th, 1798, €29,000 (€30,000-€40,000); Lot 85, Patrick Pearse's walking stick, €1,300 (€400- €600); Lot 160A, a ticket for the Dublin-Tipperary football match at Croke Park on November 21st, 1920 – Bloody Sunday, €4,200 (€3,000-€5,000); Lot 211, a photograph album of Queen Victoria's visit to Ireland in 1900, €670 (€400-€600); Lot 313, an illuminated address of welcome presented by the lord mayor of Dublin in 1915 to the new viceroy, Lord Wimborne, €480 (€200- €400); Lot 316, a bottle of 1916 Allman's Pure Irish Pot still whiskey, €6,600 (€6,000-€10,000). Lot 71, a handwritten letter by Michael Collins, dated February 9th, 1922, to a journalist at the Boston Globe, and estimated at €12,000-€15,000, failed to sell.
