The five-bedroom redbrick period house is due to be auctioned by Gunne Residential on June 14th, with a guide price of over £3.6 million (#4.57m). The selling agent is Michael Finnegan.

The property, two storeys over basement, has undergone a stylish renovation by Damien Murtagh Architects. The result is a bright home finished to a high decorative level, with rustic oak flooring in the main rooms, Italian travertine stone on the landings and a landscaped garden with water features.

The approach is very modern. Original marble fireplaces have been restored but converted to gas, and while the period windows at the front have been sensitively upgraded, those at the back are aluminium. There is a strong emphasis on security, with cameras at various points throughout the 4,000 sq ft house. To the front is a large gravelled forecourt with off-street parking. Fine granite steps lead to a front porch and into the entrance hall, which has antique stone flooring.

Colours throughout the house are fairly uniform, with red, York stone and barley white predominating.

The main reception rooms to the front of the house are divided by folding doors. They have marble fireplaces and flooring of solid oak curved planks, originally from an old cider mill. The main kitchen is at hall level, to the rear. It has a double Aga and old-style solid maple kitchen units painted antique cream. Also at hall level are a bedroom and toilet, and a door leads out to a small wrought-iron balcony.

The two biggest bedrooms overlook the front garden and have rustic oak plank flooring. The main bedroom has an original marble fireplace converted to gas. This room leads through to a walk-in dressingroom with an en suite bathroom - originally a bedroom - decorated in lavender and off-white.

The second bedroom is similar in style, and has an en suite. The main bathroom is on the first floor, near another double bedroom. In the basement is a TV/games room with an oak floor and marble fireplace. The fifth bedroom is at this level and has an en suite. Next door is a utility kitchen with Brettigny French limestone flooring and country-style painted kitchen units.

The back garden has been landscaped and the manicured lawn is framed by French cobbles with a stone fountain and lily pond. The house has fire and security alarms. Each floor has a separate gas heating system and there is sound-proofing between the floors.
