THE Government is hoping to divert many of the new computer industries and tele-marketing services to Finglas and west Dublin following a decision to designate two enterprise zones in these areas. The Government has also designated 200 acres at Knock Airport in Co Mayo.

An 80-acre site designated at Gallanstown, near Ballyfermot, forms part of Park West, a highly successful business park which is being developed at the inter-change of the M50 ring road and the Naas road. The park is owned by property developers Pat Doherty and Gerry Maguire, who have already found customers for 400,000 square feet of space in the first phase of the scheme. The industrial and warehousing buildings will be based on an area of 30 acres.

The Finglas enterprise area will be based on a 66-acre site adjoining Poppintree Industrial Estate, halfway between Finglas and Ballymun. The site has been owned since 1989 by Bovale Developments, a house-building company controlled by brothers Mick and Tom Bailey. Part of the enterprise area is to be set aside for a research centre, which will be run by Dublin City University.

Companies qualifying for the tax breaks will be able to avail of 100 per cent capital allowances, double rent and rates relief on a sliding scale for the first 10 years.
