Trending . . . in the frame
The supersizing of the television screen has made for a more immersive viewing experience, but aesthetically the screen has become an overbearing presence in the lounge. One solution is a freestanding, sturdy easel on which you can set the television.
It's an idea interior designer Jonathan Reed (0044-20-75650066 studioreed.com) came up with for a glass walled apartment he did for David Bowie about 15 years ago and works well in an open-plan space. It will take up a lot less volume than a media unit. Buy an easel with brackets deep enough to clamp your screen securely. Put the Freeview, satellite box or DVD player on the base of the frame.
K&M Evans Art Supplies (01-8726855, store.evansartsupplies.ie) sell a variety of styles. The Mabef M/02, 99cm x 68cm, costs €899. It can be painted or stained any shade to match a room scheme. Bushy Park Ironworks (01-4622788 bushyparkironworks.com) can do bespoke orders in powdercoated steel. Prices depend on dimensions and detailing. Pictured is one from US-based Restoration Hardware (restorationhardware.com) which comes in a gunmetal finish, from about €721-€902 or a wooden version that costs €1,195, ex delivery.
Three of the best . . . barbecues
The Kara planche top, a barbecue grill cum fire pit hybrid ticks all the caveman needs of warmth and food. The grill sits on a stainless steel base on which you can burn wood or charcoal. Remove the grill and you have warmth. Set on a powdercoated steel surround, it looks good even when not lit. It costs €4,510 from French-based Cesarre (0033-2400 62409, cesarre.com) Delivery to Ireland costs about €400.
The Lotus Grill is a portable device that uses convection science to cook in about half the time of most barbecues. An internal fan draws air through the vents, keeping the charcoal good for cooking. By blowing a steady stream of oxygen over the coals the smokey stage is bypassed, making it ideal for table top use. Buy from UK-based White Stores (0044-333-1235235, whitestores.co.uk) for about €275, ex delivery..
Using radiant heat, the Big Green Egg is more than just a barbecue. You can grill, bake, smoke and vertical roast on it. Food stays moist and you can control temperature.
This is a device that doesn't need to be constantly manned. The large Egg, pictured, costs €1,450, including the 'egg mates' shelves. The grill, an 'eggcessory', costs an additional €72 from Limerick-based A Room Outside (061-603686, aroomoutside.ie).
