Kings Hospital, boarding school to generations, is to get a revamp. According to a planning application lodged with South Dublin County Council, the school board is seeking permission to demolish two houses used by teachers and renovate its dormitory buildings. The school is also planning a two-storey dormitory building with two staff apartments. Improvements to the fabric of existing buildings include the addition of pitched roofs and replacement windows. Three staff houses - two dormer bungalows and one single-story residence - are also to be built.

Another school, Loreto High School, at Grange Road, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14, has lodged a planning application for the construction of a sports hall.

Demolition of some of south Dublin's traditionally large houses, which were originally laid out on spacious grounds, is continuing as the city gears up for higher housing densities. In Blackrock, at Booterstown Avenue, an application has been lodged to demolish an existing house and construct a new two-storey building comprising six two-bedroom apartments. The proposal includes a relocated entrance to the site.

Protected structures which are the subject of planning applications include a house at 1 Beacon Hill, Dalkey. Envisaged is a single-storey extension to the rear of the house, a protected structure, consisting of a kitchen and dining area and minor internal alterations in the existing house. A separate application has been made for a single-storey extension to a utility building adjacent to the house. The extension will consist of a porch, study area, utility and shower room.

A second planning application relating to Number 2 is for a single-storey extension to a building adjacent to the house, a protected structure, consisting of a porch, study area, utility and shower room.

A house at 7 Longford Place, Monkstown, Co Dublin, another protected structure, is also the subject of an application. The application is for a rearrangement of facilities at garden level including new French doors and side lights.

In Swords, at North Street, an application has been made to Fingal County Council for change of use of an existing listed house to office use. The application also envisages demolition of single-storey extensions to the rear and side of the house.

The applicant, Avoncrest Ltd, with an address at City Quay, Dublin 2, is also seeking permission for seven three-storey, pitched-roof, terraced townhouses and car-parking.

In residential news, Cork-based Melbury Developments Ltd of Sullivans Quay, Cork, has applied to South Dublin County Council for an apartment development at Garters Lane & Fortunestown Lane, Saggart, Co Dublin. The development consists of 155 apartments.

Stillorgan Plaza Shopping Centre, which has been revamped a number of times in recent years, is back in the planning lists again. There are plans to extend the first floor office accommodation by 1,362 sq m within the previously approved retail and office building. A mezzanine car-parking area with 44 car spaces is also envisaged.

In industrial development applications, permission is being sought for three blocks on a site at the M50/N2 junction, at Finglas, Dublin 11. The development is for motor car sales outlets, service areas, ancillary offices and office space. The total accommodation will come to 22,110 sq m. Block A is an eight-storey block with plant room on top. It comprises a total gross floor area of 9,443 sq m including a sales area of 1,570 sq m and 6,368 sq m of office space. Block B is a five-storey block with a total of 6,460 sq m (sales area: 970 sq m; service area: 1,060 sq m). Block C is a four-storey block 6,207 sq m (sales area: 1,005 sq m; office space: 3,327 sq m).
