An unusual house along the Ring of Kerry which took three years to build in the 1980s and almost five years to sell has finally been bought for around £1.8 million (€2.533m) by an Irish businessman based in the United States.

Country property specialist Michael Daniels has completed the sale of Long Lake House, a hexagonal-shaped building at Parknasilla with panoramic views over its own freshwater lake towards the Kenmare river and Beara Peninsula.

It was built by German craftsmen in the late 1980s and has a Wicklow granite facade with a copper mansard roof. There is more than 9,000 sq ft of floor space on three levels and large picture windows and balconies focused on the coastal setting.

The interior of the house is equally interesting because of the lavish use of marble and granite finish and underfloor heating. There is an atrium with a central mahogany and brass staircase lit by Persian onyx windows and top lights.

Long Lake House has been used for a variety of purposes over the years, initially as a small hotel, later as a restaurant and concert venue and finally as a private residence. It has a superb range of reception rooms including a hall, main salon, billiard room, library, drawingroom and diningroom. The main apartment suite has two bedrooms, bathroom, sittingroom and a balcony off it. There are also four further bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, and a fitness suite with sauna, steam room and gym.

The house stands on a 13-acre site including a wooded grounds and the freshwater lake with a private pier. There is also a helicopter pad on site, a guest cottage and three garages.
